White nose syndrome in Europe

In January 2012 we reported findings of Geomyces infestans in European bats but was that the cause of death in the bats found?  It has always been difficult to demonstrate cause and effect in this case and researchers are keen to be careful not to jump to conclusions

An article published  in New Scientist on 8th February 2012 makes this point well

“To say that white nose syndrome is in Europe could be a bit premature …..If anything, …, the single case highlights the difficulty of defining when a bat has the disease and when it is harmlessly colonised by the fungus.
