Bats ( and giraffes) at Priory Lower School

One of the things I enjoy ab0ut doing talks in schools is the art work that we get to see. Today we went back to Priory Lower School as part of the Bedford Box Building Project with the Priory Rangers. ( Eagle eyed readers may remember we have been here before to give a talk).

At a recent talk at St Leonard’s school we were greeted by a giant owl in the classroom (see https://www.bedsbatgroup.org.uk/wordpress/?p=6683). Today we were startled to meet a giraffe lurking in the entrance way.

As it turned out this was quite an appropriate beast to meet as the school was a in the throws of a chicken pox outbreak and lots of the children have also been covered in spots.

Having checked that we had all had chicken pox we were taken into the assembly hall where after a talk, year 4 set to making bat boxers

As I had talkedĀ  here before, I put together a new talk about hibernating bats and the importance of bat boxes.

Last time, I mentioned vampire bats so I finished off my talk by mentioning that I had revisited Trinidad since I had last been here and showed them a photograph of a vampire batĀ  with ticks on and told them that the blood eating bat was in turn having its blood eaten by the parasite.

At the end of the talk the Head told me I could choose whether the staff built the boxes or whether year 4 had been well enough behaved to build them. We all agreed that the children should be allowed to do this activity and the teachers had to go off to lessons as usual.

The Head also told us that her family were going to Trinidad for Carnival this year but she would have to stay at school. We told her that they make bat costumes for the carnival and afterwards I sent her this link to a TrinidadianĀ  folktale as compensation for not being able to see the carnival herself https://www.bedsbatgroup.org.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/2012-1-trinidad-bat-story.pdf

Danny has just sent me this picture of the completed boxes. Well done guys
