Little things please little minds

It is often little things that makes a bat worker happy. A few days ago, sharp eyed  Danny spotted something on the ground beneath one of the Priory bat boxes. He picked it up and brought it back indoors to photograph it. Yes folks it is bat poo. “So what” you say? Well, this poo is not from a pipistrelle, which up until now have be the only species to occupy the boxes at Priory.

So what is i?. We think it is probably droppings from a Brown Long Eared bat, which is why we got excited. Although we have historical records for brown log eareds at Priory Country Park we have failed to get any records in the five years we have been surveying the Park.

It is also possible it could be a Natterer’s , based on size,so to make sure we are going to send off the poo for DNA analysis. We have never found a Natterer’s at Priory Country Park.
