Bats hunt their prey using a process called echolocation, which we can’t hear as it is above the frequency of sound we can hear and hence was have to use a bat detector like the one Lisa uses
They listen for the echo that bounces back from the prey and can identify size distance and even texture from this information
As they get closer, they increase the number calls to produce a feeding buzz which sounds a bit like a raspberry
Each species of bat produces its own call but the difference between sies c an be very difficult to ID. Serotines are relatively easiestst as they sound like a poor jazz drummer who can’t keep the beat. We confirmed she had serotines as ayoungster got lost and was photographed by Lisa
