Bats hunt their prey using a process called echolocation, which we can’t hear as it is above the frequency of sound we can  hear and hence was have to use a bat detector like the one Lisa uses

They listen for the echo that bounces back from the prey and can identify size distance and even texture from this information

 

As they get closer, they increase the number calls to produce a feeding buzz which sounds a bit like a raspberry

 

Each species of bat produces its own call but the difference between sies c an be very difficult to ID. Serotines are relatively easiestst as they sound like a  poor jazz drummer who  can’t keep the beat. We confirmed she had serotines as   ayoungster got lost and was photographed by Lisa
