What a blustery night it was. There were hardly any birds flying and the occasional valiant swift was making heavy weather of flight. Tree leaves plummeted to the group on a regular basis and those of us at the front of the roost were very aware of the cold wind. The bats, however, probably had little option but to venture out , though they did not hang around and flew into the denser part of the nearby wood where the wind was negligble. We counted 1163 bats out. so could be heading for a new record once they start giving birth.
We also picked up a couple of barbastelle passes . At the end of the evening we headed off not for honey but for shot chocolate. Dave has suggested we bring soup next time as as numbers are increasing it is taking ever longer to count them out.
