Yet more bats at the Lakeside Survey

A busy night at the Lakeside survey last night While some us counted the bats out of the roost Soggy Dave, Bob and John went of for a wander round a nearby wood.,which had many mossies and lots of toadlets. Birder Dave was happy to spot  a tawny owl and a hobby and Bob was delighted to hear a barbastelle.

Soggy posted on the Bedfordshire Bat Group Facebook page

“Lakeside survey heralded 1130 bats this time and more than a million biting midges ! it was like a bat crèche with 3 grounded bats !”

This site was a bat creche in more ways than one. Geraldine and Dick bought their recent patient to have its genitals peered at and Sogs bought a bat she had in care to pas over to Jude as she was going on holiday at the weekend.

She was also called out to a bat just before she came to the survey, another common pipistrelle. This one had had a too close encounter with a cat and its injuries were such that it was decided to euthanase it.

We were doing an NBMP roost count and the rules say to watch until ten minutes after the last entry. Just as we had finished there was a small flurry of bats returning to the roost- mums returning to feed their pups. There was certainly plenty of food around last night
