We started looking for potential roosts last year. Yesterday 6 masochistic members of the Bat Group spend all day today, walking back and forth through trees in another section of Kings Wood in an attempt to identify potential roost sites The Greensand Trust allowed us to label any possible roosts to give us a better chance of finding them again when the leaves come out.
To prevent losing track of which trees had been checked Bob used tape to mark out each area- made the wood look a bit like a crime scene
Every potential roost was labelled, photographed and its GPS recorded. Much time was spent peering up into trees and being scratched by brambles. By the end of the day 35 trees with roost potential had been found, some of which are quite close together. Most of the potential roosts are away from the road.
We hope to cover another area later this year before the leaves come back. The next step after this, later this year, will be to stake out some of the trees in the hope of spotting bats emerging
Thanks to Claire, Andrew, Antonio Viv and Malcolm for their hard work helping Bob
