Stockgrove Survey – a visit from some barbastelles

AngieĀ  says

“It was a very pleasant evening. The first bat, a Soprano was heard at 8.39, just on the first path into Bakers wood. The first Noctule was heard at 8.51, again in Bakers wood with several more passes heard which may indicate a roost but this cannot be confirmed. There was a fair bit of Barbastelle activity just before the `low roost’ tree. The `low roost’ tree had some fresh droppings in it but no bats at the time. All the tree roosts were empty as were all the boxes.
The little bridge by the lake had a fair bit of activity with Pipistrells at 8.41 and Noctule at 8.47. The Daubentons gave a great show over the lake with 96 passes through the light.”

The level of barbastelle activity was the highest we have ever had at this site. We know there is a lot of activity in woods nearby. They were around very early and if we had been on a new site we would have thought there was a roost here. This is worthy of further investigation
